Instruction manual:

  1. Buy a canvas. Usually they are linen or cotton. Cotton canvas is cheaper and easier to handle. Flaxseed is fine-grained, suitable for prescribing small details, and coarse-grained, on which it is good to reflect the texture (for example, stones, sea). Instead of a traditional canvas , burlap, plywood, hardboard, and metal are also used to work with oil . You can use paper, but the picture will not differ in strength.
  2. A cheaper canvas is one that is pulled onto cardboard. It is thin and easy to transport, with a size of not more than 0.5 x 0.7 m. The canvas on the stretcher is more expensive and heavy, but larger up to 1.2x1.5m.
  3. Together with the canvas, get all the necessary accessories: oil paints, primer, glue, fixer, palette, brushes, palette knife, easel. If you sketch on paper and then transfer it to the canvas, you will need transparent paper (you can take tracing paper) and a carbon paper . In the process, something else may come in handy, so consult with the seller.
  4. Glue and coat the canvas with soil, and then let it dry. This operation is done so that the paint does not destroy it and lies well on the canvas.
  5. Sketch in pencil . If the writing technique is multi-layered, then the drawing must be fixed with a special tool, or covered with another layer of soil.
  6. Further, everything will depend on the technique of execution. If the picture is small, and the experience of creating pictures is still small, try the technique in one go (alla prima). This means that the painting should be completed in one or more approaches, but be in time before the paints dry. Drying time of oil paint on average about 3 days, depending on the thickness of the layer. The picture will produce the tones and colors that you create by mixing. Additional colors will be obtained due to transillumination of the soil. The picture itself will be lighter and lighter.
  7. Typically, artists use a multilayer technique: it reveals all the possibilities of oil painting. Its essence is that the author of the picture divides his task into several subtasks, which he then realizes in different layers. First, the first thin layer is created, called "undermining." For its implementation, the paint is diluted. Undermining helps to determine composition, tonality, shape, shadows and chiaroscuro.
  8. In the following layers, the artist step by step prescribes details, subtleties of form and color, texture. In the last layers, linseed oil is added to give saturation and color stability. After the paint dries, it is varnished. The duration of this period depends on the thickness of the layers, and averages 6-12 months.

Useful advice:

  • To try the pen in oil painting, do not buy expensive materials. Work in this technique requires the necessary training, skills and patience. Go from simple to complex.
  • Pencil drawing on the ground must be applied carefully so that the soil does not crack. You can secure yourself by applying another layer of soil.
  • When using a multilayer technique, remember that each layer in thickness should be equal to or greater than the previous one. Otherwise, the oil will crack.
  • Before proceeding to the next layer, wait for the previous one to dry.
  • If you didn’t like the result, gently remove the unusable layer until it is dry, or apply another layer on top.
