Its peculiar wavy lines and structure seem to be easy to do but are not nevertheless.

On many occasions we simplify things, but when we are going to make a drawing , or we are learning to draw, we realize that it is very complex to do it and immediately a state of frustration is generated, but the key to everything is not giving up.

It is important to know that the ears are a fundamental piece when drawing characters, since they help to give balance to the face .

Now, in this step-by-step guide, we are going to learn how to draw human and animal ears . To simplify things a bit, I will teach you how to draw adult ears, since there are few differences between men and women.

In general, the ears are all the same, with small variations in size. The big difference comes when drawing children's ears, these are significantly smaller and less developed.

If you want to learn to draw anything step by step , here I leave you a super complete guide where you can become a professional of this art.

Materials To Draw Ears
It is true that you only need a pencil as a basic material to draw ears, but if you have professional materials for drawing , anything you put on paper will be of a truly professional quality.

As a good cartoonist and wanting to show you what I know, I have decided to create a list where you will see all those materials necessary to become a full-quality artist.

Don't keep your hands crossed and keep going to enhance your dreams

Learning to draw an ear is not a complicated task , but it does require observation and patience.

  1. First we will start from the base of the anatomy of the ear, learning how to draw an ear is based on size and mainly on the shadows and highlights that curves generate. As I have told you in previous articles, every good draftsman must know perfectly the structures he draws, so I will briefly show you the structures that make up the ears.
  2. As you may have already noticed, the ears have a shape similar to half a heart, with the upper part bigger than the lower one.
  3. The upper part of the ear is given by the helix, and the lower circle by the ear lobe ; and it is in this earlobe where the tendrils can be drawn, in order to differentiate between a man and a woman.
  4. Other important elements are; the antehélix , which will give us a curved line in front of the helix that is important to draw, the gulp, which is a small oval structure in the anterior part of the ear, and finally, the antitrago, another curved line that will serve to give depth.
  5. Now, remember these structures and become very familiar with images of ears, so that when you draw them they look as natural as possible.
  6. You should not forget that the ears are approximately the size of the nose and are located at the ends of the face at the same height.

All the ears that I will teach you to draw will be on the right side

How To Learn To Draw Ears Of Woman Or Man In Profile?

As I told you a while ago, the ears of men and women have practically no difference, the basic structure is the same, the only difference is that you can make small variations in the size or thickness of the structures.

Another detail that can help you differentiate between these genres is the presence of holes in the earlobe, since these represent the place where the tendrils would go in women.

Now we will show you step by step how to draw a profile ear.

STEP 1. BASIC FORMS

Outline two circles, one large and one small. You must place the large circle on the small one as in the image, and leaving a space between them.

STEP 2. JOIN THE BASE FORMS, ESTABLISH THE STRUCTURE

Draw two curved lines connecting the circle. This will serve to give the basic structure to the ear. In this part you should be very solid and careful as it is probably the most essential part of the process, so make sure the lines are perfect.

STEP 3. DRAW THE INTERNAL PARTS OF THE EAR

Now you begin to draw the inside of the ear, and it is done by adding another pair of large and small circles, the largest one goes inside the first circle, the largest, and the second is between lacing with the other circle, the smaller, Finally finish by adding two other curved lines to join these other two circles.

STEP 4. ADD DETAILS

The drawing of the details is coming, for this you must relax a little, you must keep in mind that nobody has straight lines or circles in the ears actually.

If you have trouble imagining exactly what you want your ears to be like, you should tell someone to serve you as a real model and in this way you will be guided in the details that you must do. In the case that you do not have the support, look for an image that works for you as a guide model.

STEP 5. DELETE THE GUIDING LINES

Erase the guide lines after you have outlined the ear, at this time if you are not going to color your ear, you must apply the shadows to give lighting to your drawing.

STEP 6. ADD SHADOWS AND LIGHTS. ADD REALISM!

Finish off your ear by darkening some areas and shading, add more shadow and shine details. Of course do not forget to practice and practice to achieve better results in your drawings.

Remember that when drawing when we add shadows what we are looking for is to give more depth to the drawings, to give it realism, in the ears the dark shadows must go inside and the lights in the outermost structures.

How to learn to draw woman's or man's ears from the front?

In this part we will see how we can draw an ear seen from the front, that is, as if we were looking into the eyes of our character.

We must keep in mind that in reality what differentiates the ears between a man and a woman is the size of them.

Doing ears from the front usually leaves many of the structures that I showed you a little while ago, so pay close attention to the instructions.

Now if we will see how to do it, we passed our ears seen from the front.

STEP 1. DRAW THE BASE
The first thing we must draw is a kind of slightly elongated oval , and a kind of triangle is placed on the bottom of the oval, but the tip of the oval is not a very sharp point but rather concave.

STEP 2. MARK THE HELIX OF THE EAR
Now the outside is going to be marked, what I told you was the helix, start by drawing a line from the middle of the top oval starting from one side to the opposite side at the top of it.

STEP 3. DRAW THE INTERNAL PART
For the internal part, draw a line parallel to that of the helix on the internal part, this will be what I told you was called antehelix. Do it only in the anterior part of the ear, that is, the most central part.

STEP 4. CONTINUE WITH THE STRUCTURE
To finish what would be the antehelix, continue drawing from the tip of the line that we drew earlier.

Make another curved line but in the opposite direction to the one at the top, and then go down to finish the outside of the ear and the earlobe.

STEP 5. OUTLINE THE INTERNAL STRUCTURES
The inside part begins to be completed with less marked lines, starting from the second curved line that was drawn, this new line is C-shaped, and two are made, one superior to the other.

STEP 6. FINALLY ADD THE DRINK
To draw the drink, draw a small curved line towards the most central or anterior part of the ear, make it quite marked so that it stands out.

STEP 7. DIFFINE AND ADD LIGHTING
Already to add a little more realism add shadows and blend to your liking.

How to learn to draw animal ears

Now moving on to other types of important drawings, I will teach you in general to draw animal ears.

Mastering the technique of drawing animal ears is important, since, after human drawings, those of animals are the most common, so it is important to master the techniques to draw them perfectly. Talking about animal ears can be a fairly extensive topic, since there are many species of animals that exist and each with different characteristics. So they will be quite general instructions regarding the form of each one.

Similarly, there are animals with fairly similar ears, so you can only adapt them to the size of each animal.

Step By Step Techniques For Animal Ears

TYPE 1. ELEPHANT EARS
As you well know, elephants are large animals, so their ears are also quite large. To draw the elephant's ears, you must first have the trace of the elephant's face as in the following image.

Then to draw the ear start by tracing an arc upwards, then down with wavy lines , finally join this trace with another arc to the face of the elephant and repeat the same process on the opposite side. Finally, make small arches at each curve to simulate the folds of the ears. If you want to give it more realism , make them in pencil and give it depth with shadows.

TYPE 2. RABBIT EARS
Rabbit ears are also quite characteristic, they are large but elongated ears .

To draw them, begin by drawing two ovals , one larger and one smaller, the largest being the ear that faces the front. Inside the larger oval draw another oval , which will mimic the inside of the ear. Finally add small lines to draw the rabbit's fur. Remember that unlike elephants, the rabbit's fur is completely covered in fur.

TYPE 3. COMMON ANIMAL EARS LIKE CATS, DOGS, LIONS, WOLVES
In this type of animal the ears are quite similar, they tend to be triangular in some cases and more rounded in others.

In cats and wolves the ears tend to be triangular , so simply draw a rounded corner triangle and inside this smaller triangle for the inside and finally add the hair, as in the rabbit drawing. In dogs , the inner part of the ear is usually not visible but it remains triangular. Just draw a triangle with curved ends and add the fur, for the fur remember to use the shadows .

As you can see, drawing animal ears is much easier, you just need to see many images and study the shape and its structures well .
